“Perfect love casts out fear. Where there is love there are no demands, no expectations, no dependency. I do not demand that you make me happy; my happiness does not lie in you. If you were to leave me, I will not feel sorry for myself; I enjoy your company immensely, but I do not cling.”
― Anthony de Mello, Awareness
20 SUNDAY B August 19 - Homilies
20 SUNDAY – Aug 19 - Homilies
'Anyone who eats this bread will live forever.' These words of Jesus from today's gospel set the tone of our celebration today. We who share this meal share in the life of Jesus. And as he says: 'As I draw life from the Father, so whoever eats me will draw life from me.'
This is not some magic formula, rather it is the mystery that our sharing here is not simply joining us to one another in the way that every common meal unites those who participate in it, but that in our sharing here we are caught up into the life of God. We are caught up into the life of the Father, who has sent his Son among us as our source of life and wisdom, and who has sent his Spirit into our hearts.

19 Sunday
Introduction by the Celebrant
What keeps people alive and growing and healthy? For their
body, it is food and drink. Yet even for their body not only food and drink is
needed but also the nourishment of love and security. What do we need to keep
us going as Christians? It is our trusting faith in God. That faith is kept
alive and growing in us through our close relationship with Christ. He
nourishes this faith and love in us with the food and drink of his word and
with the strength he brings us through the Eucharist; this is our
"viaticum," our food and drink for the road of life. It gives us the
courage to stand up for what is right and good. Let the Lord Jesus give us in
this Eucharist the food and drink of his word and his body.
Assumption and Independence Day - Aug 15
Opening:
O God, our creator, you have made this world out of love and gathered us together as one family. Today we wish to thank you for Mary whom you freed from earthly bondage into your heavenly glory. Today 65 years ago you freed our Mother Land from foreign occupation. We thank you for all that is beautiful in India that we are proud of. Bless every citizen of our country that s/he may work for peace, prosperity and true freedom. Strengthen our hands that we may truly build and not destroy hearts and hopes, houses and future for your children.
19 SUNDAY B
While the setting of today’s Gospel is in the active
ministry of Jesus before Easter, it is clearly Eucharistic in intent and
represents St. John’s mystical reflections on the meaning of the Eucharist as a
bridge between God and us.
It is not an easy parapet on which to preach, though the
Elijah story in the first reading is a nice companion piece. Both in their own
way emphasize God’s loving care for us, come what may.
St. John has in mind through this whole section which we
read for the next several weeks the attractiveness of Jesus and the human
propensity to turn against him when something happens we don’t like.
