Today is St. Patrick’s Day. Most people think of this day as a time for wearing green and that’s about it (unless you’re Irish!). St. Patrick gets relatively little attention on his day, so I thought I might offer a few thoughts in his honor, including a prayer that is attributed to him.
Lent - Reflections
Lent is a season of soul-searching and repentance. It is a season for reflection and taking stock. Lent originated in the very earliest days of the Church as a preparatory time for Easter, when the faithful rededicated themselves and when converts were instructed in the faith and prepared for baptism.

I have often been asked why Saint Joseph had such a great importance for Saint Brother André. We can certainly speak of the importance of St. Joseph for Canada, or of the place of St. Joseph in the devotional life of French Canadian families but we can equally say that Br. André found in Holy Cross a fertile ground to develop a spirituality that gave a prominent place to St. Joseph. I want to share with you a few elements of the devotion to St. Joseph as it evolved in Holy Cross, starting from the very early days when Fr. Basile Moreau accepted responsibility for the Brothers of Saint Joseph.

Palm Sunday - Reflection
As we have come
to accompany Jesus in this week when we enter into his paschal mystery which is
the suffering, death, resurrection of our Lord, we also reflect his humanity
that took upon himself the human sufferings, rejection, betrayals and sin so
that we be freed from them all.
Season of Lent
Lent is a season
of soul-searching and repentance. It is a season for reflection and taking
stock. Lent originated in the very earliest days of the Church as a preparatory
time for Easter, when the faithful rededicated themselves and when converts
were instructed in the faith and prepared for baptism. By observing the forty
days of Lent, the individual Christian imitates Jesus’ withdrawal into the
wilderness for forty days. All churches that have a continuous history
extending before AD 1500 observe Lent. The ancient church that wrote,
collected, canonized, and propagated the New Testament also observed Lent,
believing it to be a commandment from the apostles. (See The Apostolic
Constitutions, Book V, Section III.)

How do we overcome this all-pervading temptation? It is important to realize that our hunger for the spectacular - just as our desire to be relevant - has very much to do with our search for self-hood. Being a person and being seen, praised, liked, and accepted have become nearly the same for many. Who am I when nobody pays attention, says thanks, or recognizes my work? The more insecure, doubtful, and lonely we are, the greater our need for popularity and praise.
Sadly this hunger is never satisfied. The more praise we
receive, the more praise we want, to prevent our inner fears from re-emerging.
The hunger for human acceptance is like a bottomless barrel. It can never be
filled.
To be spectacular is so much our concern that we, who
have been spectators most of our lives can hardly conceive that to be unknown,
unspectacular, and hidden can have any value.

My Lenten Journey of giving up social media
Take a look around campus next time you walk from one building to another. I would roughly say around half of the students walking are on their phones. It’s okay, I’m guilty of this too sometimes!
I wanted to take a step back and remember how it was like before social media by giving it up for Lent.
