Introduction to the Celebration

My friends in Christ, our culture is one where sudden death rarely visits us and where we are encouraged to place our trust in material wealth as never before. But today we have the stark reminder that this world is passing. A moment will come when this life is no more. It is that moment that calibrates our value system of what is true wealth: a vast hoard of money, or riches in God’s sight. Let us reflect on our values, on where we place our trust, and ask for mercy.

Pope: Five "pillars" for development: Justice for all

There is neither real promotion of the common good nor real human development when there is ignorance of the fundamental pillars that govern a nation, its non-material goods:

1) life, which is a gift of God, a value always to be protected and promoted;

2) the family, the foundation of coexistence and a remedy against social fragmentation;

3) integral education, which cannot be reduced to the mere transmission of information for purposes of generating profit;

4) health, which must seek the integral well-being of the person, including the spiritual dimension, essential for human balance and healthy coexistence;

5) security, in the conviction that violence can be overcome only by changing human hearts.

Finally, Francis encouraged the youth, and everyone, to persevere in the fight for justice.

7 Dos and Don'ts in Negotiating

by Linda Descano CFA®

Each and every day, we negotiate when we want something - be it help, advice, money, or better behavior - from someone else - our partner, our nanny, our employees, and our children. The easiest way to become comfortable in these less risky negotiations, says negotiation guru, Linda Swindling, is to watch powerful negotiators in action. She explains, "Influencers and decision makers ask questions and make decisions no matter how big or small the encounter. The best negotiators are professional and comfortable with everyone they meet from the front line to CEOs."

What the Bible Says About Money (Shocking)

Most people know Sean Hyman from his regular appearances on Fox Business, CNBC, and Bloomberg Television, but what they don’t know is that Sean is a former pastor, and that his secret to investing is woven within the Bible.

Perhaps that can explain why, despite his uncanny ability to predict precise moves in the stock market, Sean is often laughed at for his unique stance on investing.

17 Sunday C - Teach us to Pray - Homilies

Thomas O’Loughlin
Introduction to the Celebration

We are assembled here, not as a bunch of individuals, but as distinct members of a single body. This is something that we recall in a special way today when we read a story about the first disciples asking to be taught how to prayer together. We are the people who can call God our Father, who gather now to thank him and praise his name, who gather to ask him for our daily needs, and who ask him to forgive us as we forgive others. We need to pause now and recall our need of forgiveness for ourselves, and Jesus’s call to us to forgive others.

Gospel Notes

Staying with the important theme of prayer, this week’s extract from Luke brings the teaching on prayer that accompanied the giving of the Our Father. In Luke, Jesus teaches this prayer because the disciples have asked for his help. The form of the prayer is the short one, as opposed to the longer version in Matthew which was adopted by the church as the version for use in the liturgy. In its short form we see even more clearly how this simple prayer has all that we need. We praise God as Father, we acknowledge that we want what he wants and that we trust him to look after us. We also recognise our need for forgiveness and our willingness to forgive. Finally we ask that in the life of faith we will not have to endure anything that would cause us to lose that faith. In what follows, Jesus uses the images of the unwilling friend and the caring parent to make us think about the relationship with God that should lie behind our prayer. God is the loving Father and in giving us the Holy Spirit he is holding back nothing.

HR Manager in Heaven!!!

One day while walking down the street a highly successful Human Resources Manager was tragically hit by a bus and she died. Her soul arrived up in heaven where she was greeted by God himself.

"Welcome to Heaven," said God. "Before you get settled in though, it seems we have a problem. You see, strangely enough, we've never once had a Human Resources Manager make it this far and we're not really sure what to do with you."

"No problem, just let me in," said the woman.

Angel of Death - Story

Better Management of Church Finances

Francis, Bishop of Rome, has appointed an eight-member commission to study the function of the Vatican Bank, and to suggest steps to be taken to improve not only its functioning but also its integrity. For some years the Vatican Bank has been functioning like ‘a den of thieves’ (Mk 11.17). When John Paul I became the Bishop of Rome there was fear that he would go into the functioning of the Vatican Bank. That was one reason why he was murdered. The eight-member commission appointed by Francis has seven lay persons and only one cleric. The president of this commission is a lay person. Can we learn something from Francis?

Tiger's Tail and Conversion

It has been said, “Be contented with what you have, but never too contented with what you are.”
There is a story that comes out of Asia about a farmer who saw a tiger’s tail swishing between two large rocks. In a moment of haste, he grabbed the tail and pulled. All of a sudden he realized he had an angry tiger by the tail and only two rocks stood between him and the tiger’s teeth and claws! So there he remained, afraid to loosen his grip on the enraged animal’s tail lest he surely be killed.
A monk happened by and the farmer called out in desperation, “Come over here and help me kill this tiger.”
The holy man said, “Oh, no. I cannot do that. I cannot take the life of another.” Then he went on to deliver a homily against killing. All the while, the farmer was holding tightly to the tail of an angry tiger.
When the monk finally finished his sermon, the farmer pleaded, “If you won’t kill the tiger, then at least come hold its tail while I kill it.”
The monk thought that perhaps it would be all right to simply hold the tiger’s tail, so he grabbed hold and pulled. The farmer, however, turned and walked away down the road.

Two wolves within us - Story

Feeding a wolf and reaping likewise

I once heard a story told about a Cherokee grandfather who was teaching his grandson about the life principles of his tribe. The grandfather said ‘on the inside of every person is a battle raging between two wolves. One wolf is evil. It is angry, jealous, proud, lazy, spiteful, hurtful and unforgiving. The other wolf is good and kind and full of self control. These two wolves fight constantly.’  For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption.

but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life. Galatians 6:8
The little grandson thought about this for a moment and then said ‘which wolf will win, Grandfather?’
The grandfather replied ‘whichever one you feed.’

16 Sunday C - Mary and Martha - Homilies

Thomas O’Loughlin
Introduction to the Celebration

Welcome! Today we recall a small incident in the life of Jesus. Going along a road he came to a village and was welcomed into a house. There one sister, having to get the meal, complained that the other just sat and listened to Jesus; and Jesus says that this second sister, named Mary, ‘has chosen the better part and it is not to be taken from her’. This Mary is a model of discipleship for us. We are frequently busy with many things, but are we spending time listening to the voice of the Lord, are we reflecting on his wisdom, are we meditating on his goodness and wonder as we see it around us in the creation, are we recalling his gift of life, are we rejoicing in the presence of the Word made flesh?

Good Samaritan - Today's Situation & Reactions

First a Prayer:

Lord, who is my neighbor?

-1 was hungry and you helped me buy rice, while trying for a long term solution to my emptiness.
-1 was a stranger in a city where everybody was suspicious of me, and you trusted me, and put me at ease.
-1 was unemployed, without clothes, food and money or security; you tried to help me find a job and rebuild my life.
-I was sick and unable to get into a hospital or see a doctor; you tried to find a hospital bed for me and a compassionate doctor who was more concerned about my health than the money I did not have.
-I was in trouble with the law for my mistakes, and you tried to defend me while encouraging me, to change my ways; as no lawyer came forward, I lost and went to prison for a time, during which you came to visit me without judging me.
-I had a motorcycle accident and profusely bleeding, you called the ambulance and the police while everyone was afraid to get involved.
-I was considered "low caste" by other folks and you tried to give me some status, face and pride in myself.
-In all these difficulties, you never really succeeded. You just tried and that enabled me to plod on for the moment.
-You stood by me and tried. That was all I needed to be myself in a place where I just existed.
-You did these simple, compassionate things until the day when all systems, institutions and hearts were changed into a new history.

Thank you for being my neighbor!

Man on a Harley and God and Woman - Just for a laugh

A man on his Harley was riding along a California beach when suddenly the sky clouded above his head and, in a booming voice, God said, 'because you have tried to be faithful to me in all ways, I will grant you one wish.'

The biker pulled over and said, 'Build a bridge to Hawaii so I can ride over anytime I want.'

Church and the Touching Example of "Preaching"

TimHis name is Tim. He has wild hair, wears a T-shirt with holes in it, jeans, and no shoes.
This was literally his wardrobe for his entire four years of college.
He is brilliant. Kind of profound and very, very bright.
He became a Christian while attending college.
Across the street from the campus is a well-dressed, very conservative church.
They want to develop a ministry to the students but are not sure how to go about it.
One day Tim decides to go there. He walks in with no shoes, jeans, his T-shirt, and wild hair.

15 Sunday C - Good Samaritan - Homilies

Thomas O’Loughlin,
Introduction to the Celebration

We live in the age of the sound bite: a snappy phrase that covers over a complex situation; and rarely in matters of faith is such a sound-bite possible. Yet today at our gathering to join the Lord at his table we are asked to recall one of the most famous sound bites of all time. A lawyer stands up to ask Jesus a question:

‘Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?’ And as the good teacher Jesus does not just feed him the answer but draws it out from him: ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbour as yourself.’ It sounds simple. But keeping both dimensions, loving God and loving neighbour is difficult; and an even bigger challenge is making sure that for us neighbour is more than the people we like, and so excludes all forms of sectarianism, racism, other barriers humans tend to set up between us and ‘them’.

Become a Lake

handful of salt in a glass of waterThe old Master instructed the unhappy young lady to put a handful of salt in a glass of water and then to drink it. “How does it taste?” the Master asked. “Very bad” Said the lady.
The Master then asked the young lady to take another handful of salt and put it in the lake. The two walked in silence to the nearby lake and when the apprentice swirled his handful of salt into the lake, the old man said, “Now drink from the lake.”
LakeAs the water dripped down the young lady’s chin, the Master asked, “How does it taste?” “Good!” remarked the apprentice. “Do you taste the salt?” asked the Master. “No,” said the young lady.

Don’t Judge the Composer

PianoWhen visiting in a parish neighborhood, a pastor stopped at a house and asked the man who lived there to visit his church the next Sunday, mentioning at the same time that the man’s neighbor went to that same church. On hearing this, the man said he would never go to that church because he wanted nothing to do with a religion that would have a man like his neighbor in it. In fact, he said, his neighbor was the worst neighbor he ever had.

14 Sunday C - Mission - Homilies

Thomas O’Loughlin
Introduction to the Celebration

When we think of Jesus preaching we think of people flocking to hear him, just as today we gather to re-affirm our identity as his people gathered now at his table. But in today’s gospel we hear of people being sent out from Jesus to prepare his way before him. We gather now, but we are also the people he has charged to prepare his way in the world today. To be a disciple is not only to follow, but to go ahead of the Lord announcing his presence. Let us reflect on these twin aspects of being Christians: following the Lord, and presenting the Lord to the world. We are called not only to be ‘disciples’ but ‘apostles’.
