Who hurts you? Abraham Lincoln
When Abraham Lincoln became the president of America, his father was a
shoemaker. And, naturally, egoistic people were very much offended that a
shoemaker’s son should become the president. On the first day, as Abraham
Lincoln entered to give his inaugural address, just in the middle, one man stood
up. He was a very rich aristocrat. He said, “Mr. Lincoln, you should not
forget that your father used to make shoes for my family.” And the whole Senate
laughed; they thought that they had made a fool of Abraham Lincoln.
Lent: Stories and Illustrations

1) Alluring music of the
Sirens:
In
Greek mythology the sirens are creatures with the heads of beautiful women and
the bodies of attractive birds. They lived on an island (Sirenum scopuli; three
small rocky islands) and with the irresistible charm of their song they lured
mariners to their destruction on the rocks surrounding their island (Virgil V,
846; Ovid XIV, 88). They sang so sweetly that all who sailed near their home in
the sea were fascinated and drawn to the shore only to be destroyed. When
Odysseus, the hero in the Odyssey, passed that enchanted spot he tied himself
to the mast and put wax in the ears of his comrades, so that they might not
hear the luring and bewitching strains. But King Tharsius chose a better way.
He took the great Greek singer and lyrist Orpheus along with him. Orpheus took
out his lyre and sang a song so clear and ringing that it drowned the sound of
those lovely, fatal voices of sirens. The best way to break the charm of this
world’s alluring voices during Lent is not trying to shut out the music by
plugging our ears, but to have our hearts and lives filled with the sweeter
music of prayer, penance, word of God, self control, and acts of charity. Then
temptations will have no power over us (RH).

Fable of the Hedgehog
Do you have people in your life who annoy the hell out of you? Sure you do, none of us are perfect – but if we learned to live with the imperfections of our fellow man, we could all benefit in some way or another. This fable explains it perfectly.

Billy Graham's Daughter
Billy Graham's daughter was interviewed on the Early Show and Jane Clayson asked her "How could God let something like this happen?" (regarding the attacks on Sept, 11, hurricanes and earth quakes. Anne Graham gave an extremely profound and insightful response. She said "I believe God is deeply saddened by this, just as we are, but for years we've been telling God to get out of our schools, to get out of our government and to get out of our lives.

11 Sunday B: Kingdom of God
Michel DeVerteuil Textual Comments
We see Jesus in this passage searching for the right metaphors to illustrate the concept of the kingdom of God, and we are reminded that today we need to find new images to illustrate our own vision of God’s kingdom.
Verses 26b to 30. A farmer has sown a tiny seed; he now watches and waits for it to bear fruit. Jesus makes a comparison between the small and negligible start and the extraordinary results. The farmer is in no hurry, he simply waits and lets things happen. Whatever happens will take its own time and he must certainly not try to hurry it. He does not try to find out how this happens, but allows things to develop as they will. When the time is ripe the farmer knows that he must get to work. Stay with the slow movement, the first signs of the crop before it is harvest time. Experience the contrast in the last verse when the time comes and everything seems so easy and natural.

Mother - Quotes and Stories
MOTHER
No man is poor who has had a godly mother.
Abraham Lincoln.
An ounce of mother is worth a ton of priest.
Spanish proverb.
When Robert Ingersoll, the notorious skeptic, was in his heyday, two college students went to hear him lecture. As they walked down the street after the lecture, one said to the other, “Well, I guess he knocked the props out from under Christianity, didn’t he?” The other said, “No, I don’t think he did. Ingersoll did not explain my mother’s life, and until he can explain my mother’s life I will stand by my mother’s God.”
James S. Hewett, Illustrations Unlimited, Tyndale, 1972, p. 381.
Motherhood and Compassion. A few days ago I made a marvelous discovery. In the Hebrew language of the Old Testament the word for “compassion” comes from the root word, “womb.” The picture is of a birthing. Something new is being born. If I apply this in a human experience, it means that my compassionate acts always give the other person another chance. I do not hold past failures against them. I offer a “fresh start.” I want this for myself from others. Am I willing to give it to the other person? Such compassion will dramatically change the way we relate to each other.

Parent's Influence. When parents understand the source of joy, when they decide to let Christ rule in their home, they have chosen the way of joy that will never disappoint them. Billy Graham’s parents were both committed Christians. Although he was a businessman, his father had at one time felt a desire to preach. The way never seemed opened for him. After Billy entered the ministry, the father said, “I prayed for years for a way to be opened. But never once was there the slightest encouragement from God. My heart burned and I wondered why God did not answer my prayer. Now I feel I have the answer. I believe that my part was to raise a son to be a preacher.” Imagine the joy that thought brought to him and to his wife.

Touching Story of a Father searching for his son
God is Faithful!
In the country of Armenia, in 1988, Samuel and Danielle sent their young son, Armand, off to school. Samuel squatted before his son and looked him in the eye. "Have a good day at school, and remember, no matter what, I’ll always be there for you." They hugged and the boy ran off to school.
