Birth Day of the Blessed Virgin Mary
The Church has
celebrated Mary's birth since at least the sixth century. A September birth was
chosen because the Eastern Church begins its Church year with September. The
September 8 date helped determine the date for the feast of the Immaculate
Conception on December 8 (nine months earlier).
Scripture does not give an account of Mary's birth. However, the apocryphal Protoevangelium of James fills in the gap. This work has no historical value, but it does reflect the development of Christian piety. According to this account, Anna and Joachim are infertile but pray for a child. They receive the promise of a child that will advance God's plan of salvation for the world. Such a story (like many biblical counterparts) stresses the special presence of God in Mary's life from the beginning.

Introduction
The Bible, including today's readings, sees Mary in function of her Son; nothing more is said about her in the Gospel than what illustrates and serves Christ's mission. Her inconspicuous and self-effacing service is very telling about her character and role—and at the same time about our mission: to witness quietly to the pre-eminence of Christ, to serve him, to be open to his salvation, to live for others.

Amado Nervo was a Mexican mystic and poet who died in 1919.
One of his poems captures the spirit of Mary’s song in today’s reading. He
wrote:

Introduction
Luke
presents Mary as the Ark of the Covenant coming to Jerusalem to show that God
is present among his people to bring them joy. This is why the child leaps
(that is, dances for joy) in Elizabeth's womb. With Christ, God comes to live
not in a temple of stone but in the hearts of people. Through Christ living in
Mary God's victory over evil has begun. A person in whom Christ lives - a
Christ-bearer, a Christopher - brings Christ to others, and with Christ, joy
and love.

The most basic fact about today is that it is New Year’s Day, the public holiday that marks the end of the holiday season, and the beginning of any number of other things from diaries to keeping accounts of various sorts. In everyone’s eyes it is a special day. If we think of time as made up of ‘stressed’ (= special days; special time) and ‘unstressed'(= ordinary days; everyday time) periods, then this is a ‘stressed’ day par excellence.

It is called the “Breviary of the common people” and the “Psalms of the Illiterate.” The prayers we repeat are Biblical and hence “inspired,” and the mysteries we meditate upon are taken from the lives of Jesus and Mary.

O God, our creator, you have made this world out of love and gathered us together as one family. Today we wish to thank you for Mary whom you freed from earthly bondage into your heavenly glory. Today 71 years ago you freed our Mother Land from foreign occupation. We thank you for all that is beautiful in India that we are proud of. Bless every citizen of our country that s/he may work for peace, prosperity and true freedom. Strengthen our hands that we may truly build and not destroy hearts and hopes, homes and future for your children.

Advent Sunday 4 B: Annunciation: Behold ...
TK Notes:
A. Any one who is into counseling knows that people come to you because of some anxiety or fear they face in life due to a) a relationship, b) a decision/choice or c) faith/ideology issue. They are all trying to find a way to cope with that situation. Mary too comes with, "How's this possible?"
B. Essentially, a counselor helps the counselee to cope with or face or remove that anxiety/fear.
a. Theologically: explains the meaning/purpose of the experience: The Holy Spirit will come down on you. You are going to conceive a child who will be Emmanuel. He is going to save Israel.
b. Sociologically: I'll be with you; I'll accompany you. Even your cousin Elizabeth....
c. Psychologically: Do not be afraid, Mary .....
We touch the heart by addressing the mind/ spirit and providing support.
C. If that's so, "Behold the handmaid of the Lord." Acceptance, conquering the fear and doubt.
People undertake difficult tasks and responsibilities in life if you follow these steps.
We move from "How's it possible?" to "Behold the handmaiden of the Lord" when God enters into our life.

Introduction: Since we celebrate the Feast
of Mary, the Mother of God on New Year’s Day, may I take this opportunity
to wish you all a Happy and Peaceful New Year? I pray that the Lord Jesus
and His mother Mary may enrich your lives during the New Year with an
abundance of God’s blessings. Today’s Feast of Mary, the Mother of God
is a very appropriate way to begin a new year, reminding us to rely on the
powerful intercession of our Heavenly Mother. The Church observes this day also
as the World Day of Peace and invites us to pray specially for lasting
peace in the world throughout the New Year.

As a joke, the workman whispered, "Woman, this is Jesus." The woman ignored him. The workman whispered again, more loudly: "Woman, this is Jesus." Again, the woman ignored him. Finally, he said aloud, "Woman, don't you hear me? This is Jesus." At this point the woman looked up at the crucifix and said, "Be still now, Jesus, I'm talking to your mother." Why do Catholics treasure Marian devotions and doctrines that their non-Catholic brothers and sisters do not? It is because, I think, the Catholic Church is trying to tell the full story, to proclaim the full gospel.

General Textual Comments
Here is another very famous story which you must meditate on personally, letting yourself be guided by your feelings.
The passage has given rise to deep and sometimes mystical interpretations, but at root it is a simple story of human relationships and your meditation must start there.
You may like to focus on Jesus. See him as a model human being, receiving the hospitality of the sisters, accepting the love of Mary, teaching Martha wisdom, kindly but firmly.
